I am struck by how many conscientious, educated people who fully believe in science often believe that there is something magical about “organic” food. When I share some of your work, they are stunned. It is a message that needs to continue to be heard.
Bingo. One surprising factoid is that more scientists agree that GMOs are completely safe than that humans are responsible for climate change. Feed that to your crunchy friends who roll out science when it's convenient, only to ignore it when it makes them uncomfortable!
Thank you for a wonderful column. I am embarrassed to admit that I never thought about it in this way - I had assumed that by buying organic food I would be supporting farmers who were trying to farm in a more sustainable and healthier way. Now that you point out the parallels with the wellness community, I have to rethink my whole approach to food shopping!
Hi, have been following you for a while and know you have written about center for science in the public interest before and have issue with many of their statements. Do you have any thoughts about the recently released food guidelines? They have released a version "The Uncompromised Dietary Guidelines" that seems to take issue with much of what RFK's bunch have released. Can 2 things be true at the same time? That they provide some reasonable push back against some of the craziness that this administration is supporting at the same time not be on the right side of science? I know you have a lot happening right now so totally understand if you can get to this right now, or if you have some links that might be helpful for me to sort through some of this. Keep up the good work, you are a shining light in the darkness!!

I wrote a piece a while ago for FAS advocating specific changes to food labeling: https://fas.org/publication/protecting-consumers-by-reforming-food-labeling-regulations/. It generated a lot of "Hear, hear!" from my limited audience but zero legislation. Thought it might be an interesting "Now, what?" to your column.

Great one-liner...Wellness-based agriculture is no more acceptable than wellness-based (healthcare).

We are not immune in Canada, sadly the premier of Alberta has blurred the line between science & politics.
