Dr. Andrea Love continues to be a vital voice pushing back against the tidal wave of wellness pseudoscience. Her evidence-based breakdown of Aly Cohen’s claims and the broader disinformation ecosystem shows how fear, false authority, and cherry-picked data are used to manipulate public opinion. This kind of myth-busting is crucial as we face rising vaccine hesitancy, misinformation about food safety, and dangerous “detox” fads.
I really appreciate Dr. Love’s work, not just for the clarity and accuracy of her science but for the courage it takes to call out credentialed pseudoscience directly. She doesn’t flinch and she doesn’t water it down. If you care about real science, not just vibes and vague credentials, her work is essential reading.
You make such a good point when you highlight “emotional” or emotionally-charged language. If we pay attention to language, we will notice ways in which it can be used manipulatively - to subtly imply that fiction is fact, to get people riled up enough that they will respond out of fear or anger, not rational thinking. I also continue to be struck by the belief that anyone in a field knows everything about that field. If I need open heart surgery, I’m pretty sure I won’t ask an orthopedist, for instance. Influencers who claim to know it all are dangerous. Hard stop.
This is such an important point! Scientists are trained to use facts and present them in a logical manner, which isn’t necessarily the most riveting. Emotional appeals is one of the top red flags to watch for!
I watched the whole thing and I yelled out loud at Aly so many times! Gah! And the fact that she has text books she’s authored?! Eish. Thanks for taking this on and writing a newsletter about it especially with all you have going on. Sending light and strength to you!
I appreciate your dedication and value the work you’re doing. I messed up and regret missing a recent lecture you gave in Corvallis, OR. Right up the road from my town. I would have loved to shake your hand.
I am not sure if she knew of you and what your expertise are but she was way out of her depth here. I have no doubt that she is a caring physician but it was unreal how she simply kept utilizing the natural is better fallacy and demonizing “synthetic” chemicals. She had absolutely no answer for your evidence based debunking of her sweeping generalizations and buzz words.
It seems as though her whole approach is based on emotional vibes and “chemicals are bad” rhetoric. She tried to accuse you of insinuating that the general public is too ignorant or uneducated to research chemicals. To me it seemed as though you were was saying that the majority of people will not even understand what they are reading and most likely fall victim to chemophobia as a result. Like Dr Mike said - he just has to trust that the Boeing engineers know what they are doing when he gets on a plane. We have to trust experts on any given subject at some point.
I’ve already watched a conversation on Dr. Mike's YouTube channel. I also shared the key points with a friend from work. We were both surprised by how much of our knowledge is actually false and how these beliefs make our lives much more difficult. It's a relief to know that these "chemicals" aren't as bad as many people claim. Thank you for all your work. ❤️
